Accommodation

Berkshire Outdoor Center provides lodging on our two sites here in the Berkshires - Camp Becket and Chimney Corners Camp. Accommodation ranges from rustic cabins in villages through to premium lodging in our Ina Gibson Lodge. In total there are four main winterized lodges for up to 175 guests and there are 75 cabins housing over 750 people at any one time.

Lodges

Winterized - There are four large, winterized lodges at the Berkshire Outdoor Center, housing a total of 175 guests. All lodges are self-contained, each having heat and electricity. All lodges also have bathrooms, showers and hot water. These lodges house guests in rooms ranging in size from 2 to 12. Beds are single and bunk beds, and each lodge has a different layout. Non-Winterized - There is one large non-winterized lodge at the Berkshire Outdoor Center, located at Camp Becket. This lodge houses approximately 70 people, and is the crown jewel of buildings at Becket. It is the third oldest building on the property, completed in 1917, and is named after the camp's founder - Henry Gibson. Gibson Hall has heat, electricity, bathrooms, shower and hot water. It is arranged with bunk beds - approximately 4 to a room. The building also has two suites at each end of the 2nd floor. Gibson Hall is open from mid-May until mid-October.

Cabins

The Berkshire Outdoor Center has two main campuses - Camp Becket (Camp Becket Map pdf) and Chimney Corners Camp (Chimney Corners Map pdf). Each camp has rustic cabins arranged in villages. Camp Becket has 4 villages, and Chimney Corners Camp has 3. Each village of cabins is organized around a centralized wash-house. The wash-house has hot running water (regular showers) and regular flush toilets. Each shower and toilet has an individual stall, and the wash-houses even have private, outdoor showers!

Each cabin in the village is rustic - no electricity. This rusticity allows participants to truly feel they are in the wilderness and spend time bonding together. Most of our guests choose cabins for their accommodation, as they are then experiencing 'real camp!' The cabins are very comfortable, and each house 10 - 8 in the main room (bunk style), 1 in a side room (usually for

chaperones) and 1 in a vestibule area. The new cabins in Iroquois Village and Senior Unit have three seperate rooms. Cabins are open May 15 - October 15.

Camp Becket (Camp Becket Map pdf) - Click to see more about each village, including a layout map:

  • Iroquois Village - brand new cabins, 7 cabins - 77 beds. Iroquois Village is located near the Iroquois Waterfront on the shores of Rudd Pond. The village is close to the dining hall and is the most comfortable village at the Becket campus.
  • Pioneer Village - 9 cabins - 90 beds. Pioneer is located on a hill top. It is the most 'real camp' village at Camp Becket.
  • Frontier Village - 8 cabins, 80 beds. Frontier is the showcase village with grand views of the main waterfront on Rudd Pond.
  • Ranger Village - 10 cabins, 100 beds. Ranger Village is tucked away in the woods. It is the village with the most 'forested' feel.

Chimney Corners Camp - Click to see village layout:

  • Junior Unit - 10 cabins - 100 beds. Junior Unit is nearest the Chimney Corners Dining Hall.
  • Intermediate Unit - 10 cabins - 100 beds. Scattered in woodland, Intermediate Unit has the strongest forested setting.
  • Senior Unit - 7 cabins - 77 beds. Senior Unit is located nearest the main waterfront on Smith Pond and the Environmental Learning Center. Senior Unit is the most comfortable unit at the Chimney Corners campus.
How to Choose Lodging

Cabins - It depends what you want to get out of the experience. Cabins provide the true get-away-from-the-city feel. This is the real experience where participants spend the night with flashlights and lanterns instead of flick-the-switch lighting. Most of our participants prefer this option.

Lodges - Lodges are great for the winter months and for participants who need electricity and heat. Lodges are also a more comfortable option for older participants who prefer the bathroom at the end of the hall.
