Outdoor Education
The Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA is committed to providing students opportunities in residential Outdoor Education. Classroom sessions come to life on 1,350 acres of forest trails, mountain ponds, bogs and beaver meadows. We welcome groups from public schools, private schools, home schools and other learning institutions throughout he entire school year. Our program allow schools to customize their class selection so the outdoor education program becomes and extension of the school’s curriculum.

Goals of the Outdoor Education Program
  • To enable students to understand and experience the relationship between themselves and the natural environment, and their role as environmental stewards.
  • To strengthen the social relationships between:
    • Teachers and students
    • Students and their peer
  • To give the student a sense of independence and self-identity.
  • To give all students a chance to succeed in a safe environment.
  • To encourage the student to become more aware of his/her senses.
  • To foster an attitude of inquiry in the student.
  • To encourage openness & active participation in outdoor activities.

The Outdoor Education Program at the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA strives to encourage students to learn experientially about nature and their roles as stewards of the environment, and to learn more about themselves while living and working cooperatively in a community environment.

The staff at the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA believe that outdoor education involves more than just understanding environmental sciences and issues. We must also provide opportunities where people can learn to communicate effectively and build the foundations of real cooperation. We believe that you will find our program and its goals to be centered in these ideals.
