CCC Dining Hall Updates - Nov 2005 - Feb 2006

February 23rd, 2006

The temperature certainly plummted the last few days, but there are still more than 30 guys working down here, getting the roof on to make part of the building weather-tight before the snow comes tomorrow. The roofing is being finished over the office, stores and main entrance, as well as the loading dock. The Climbing Tower is being framed in, and inside piping continues to go in, as well as heating ducts.

Masons are working on each of the two fireplaces, as well as the interior walls for the kitchen, dish room, dry storage and refridgeration areas.

With ideal temperatures last week, a lot of work was done quickly on the roof of the dining hall, as can be seen in these shots.

Over 60 degrees on a Friday afternoon in February is as good a reason as any to get out of the office and get down to the construction site and check out the progress, with one exception: It's a bit muddy.

60 degrees is also a great temperature to work in if you are one of the 35 construction workers down at the site each day this week. At the height of the construction work this week though, there were up to 48 people working on getting the CCC Dining Hall ready for the opening date: June, 2006.

Trusses over the main office. Roof over the tower. Masonry in the kitchen. Fireplaces in each of the side rooms. Heating ducts downstairs. It's all happening. There's guys everywhere down at the site this week, taking advantage of beautiful sunny days.

The slab in the kitchen was poured in the last few hours, and the roof is being framed on the tower entrance. The stair wells are almost operational and the first of two chimneys is under construction. The trusses for the roof above the main offices have arrived. There is a lot of busy, busy work down at the site this week, and the building is really coming along quickly. These are the weeks when the most visual changes will occur rapidly.

The building will certainly be a wonderful addition to the summer camp and Outdoor Center operation and truly promises to be the signature building of the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA

The slab on the main floor has been poured. The slab in the basement has been poured. The slab in the kitchen is ready to be poured tomorrow. The temperature is hovering in the high 20s this week, and everything is coming along swimmingly.

The Board of Trustees visited the building site today as part of their quarterly Board Retreat to the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA. The inspection included a look at the main dining space, the side dining rooms, the kitchen and food storage, the indoor climbing tower, and the basement and maintenance areas downstairs.

This was the first time I have been inside the basement of the new Dining Hall. These photos were taken on a rainy day, 33 degrees Fahrenheit. It is nice and big inside, which will eventually mean plenty of storage and program space. The most phenomenal part of the experience for me today was being in the room where the new indoor climbing tower will be.

New Year's Eve was wonderful at camp this year, with New Year's Family Camp happening in the Arts Center. It snowed about an inch overnight, and of course there was no work on New Year's Day. Coinstruction recommenced on January 3rd.

Christmas was obviously quiet at the site, as was the next day, but you can see construction here is ready to continue into the new year. All the plastic you see everywhere is just a bit of protection from the cold elements up here in Becket over the winter. The guys on the site are working pretty hard and this allows them a bit of a break from the cold winds that sometimes pick up.

With the structural steel all in place, work has begun on framing the offices and the store section of the building, as well as the welcome tower facing out to the green. This timber framing will allow the building to be enclosed so that workers may continue working with some heat provided. The back masonery wall of the kitchen is also being erected beneath plastic.

Structural steel is here and, as you can see, is being erected today under grey skies. The next few days will see poor weather, but not poor enough to slow the construction project.
