General Function

The Assistant Director is responsible for hiring, training and evaluating seasonal Program Instructors. Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for creating, planning and implementing a variety of Berkshire Outdoor Center programs, including leadership development programs for high schools and colleges, environmental education programs for middle and elementary schools, family camps, women's wellness weekends, programs for corporate groups, and facility groups. The Assistant Director will supervise, train and evaluate full-time Program Coordinators to deliver these programs. Additionally, the Assistant Director will supervise the operation of Becket Day Camp - including staffing, program design and implementation. The Assistant Director will supervise, train and evaluate a seasonal Becket Day Camp Director to deliver this program. Further, the Assistant Director will function as the organization's Challenge Course Manager - supervising, training, inspecting and overseeing our comprehensive challenge course facilities.


The Assistant Director must:

1. Have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, recreation or a related field

2. Have a minimum of 2 years full-time experience in education, recreation or in a related field, preferably outdoor education

3. Have a commitment to the mission of BCCYMCA and an ability to promote this mission to guests and staff.

4. Have excellent communication and organizational skills, confidence and willingness to be positive and motivational with all.

5. Be flexible, patient and have strong initiative.

6. Be a customer service oriented problem solver.

Principle Activities (Program Planning)

1. Supervise, manage and evaluate PCs and the BDC Director.

2. Ensure quality control planning, organization and systemization of BOC Program with BOC Executive Director.

3. Manage the BCCYMCA Challenge Course operation, including training, inspecting and supervising.

4. Create, develop and manage BOC curriculum.

5. Manage BOC program supplies: purchase, retire and inventory supplies by season

6. Meet regularly with the BOC Executive Director and PCs to share updates, information and planning.

7. Maintain open communication with PCs and BOC Executive Director and file copy of all written communication.

Principle Activities (Program Implementation)

1. Ensure quality of BOC program through supervision, coaching and mentoring of Program Coordinators – assisting them in the monitoring of staff work habits, performance evaluation, liaisons with group leaders, and assisting in making corrections where needed.

2. Serve as the staff member on call as assigned and respond to any emergencies or situations promptly & professionally.

Principle Activities (Staffing)

1. Supervise and evaluate Program Coordinators, in conjunction with BOC Executive Director

2. Recruit, hire, train and evaluate Program Coordinators, Program Instructors and Becket Day Camp staff

3. Assist Program Coordinators in supervising Program Instructors and facilitation of staff meetings.

4. Perform staff check-in and check-out procedures, supervise staff in keeping housing clean.

Principle Activities (General)

1. Function as an effective member of the staff team and the entire department & organization.

2. Communicate effectively to staff and supervisor.

3. Perform all assigned duties in an enthusiastic and timely manner.

4. Maintain general facility and equipment upkeep on a daily basis. Maintain facility for safety and cleanliness.

5. Assist with maintaining compliance with all ACA accreditation requirements and Commonwealth regulations.

6. Work to develop a leading edge program which meets the needs of the clientele of BCCYMCA.

Effect on end Results

1. Each group visiting BOC will experience consistent and high quality customer service.

2. All programs administered by BOC will be conducted in a fun, safe and age appropriate manner.

3. Staff morale and retention will be consistently high.

4. Weekly group evaluations will meet defined expectations.
